“Iconic Photos of the Vietnam War and Their Influence on Collective Memory,” is an Honors Thesis by Angie Lovelace. The thesis was completed in her senior year of undergraduate study as a fulfillment of the Honors Program at Elon University.
Angie received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism with a minor in Photography from Elon University in May 2010. This thesis allowed Angie to combine her interests in Media History and photojournalism to study how photojournalism is used a means of recounting history as well as remembering it.
For this study, participants were interviewed to better understand how they remember iconic photos from the Vietnam War era. The participants were presented with five iconic photos and asked specific questions about the photos in order to gauge their understanding of the photos and provoke participants’ memories of the time period.
